“FLOEMA: music from plants.

Saturday, April 20th from 3 p.m. A bioacoustics performance as part of the Rome Science Festival – Auditorium Macro

“Floema, a
project of
popularization of
bioacoustics of the CNR Institute for Biological Systems (CNR-Isb), is an event held as part of the Festival of Science at the Auditorium of the Macro (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Rome.: a performanceinterspecies” of ArtsScience where musicians and “musical” plants give rise to collaborative performances, of ambient music, drones, experimental interspecies of bioacoustics, with music played on a synth from a plant, accompanied by improvisations of electronic and cello textures.

Specifically, the “Floema” initiative will feature 2 musicians (synth/electronics and cello) and a plant connected to a synthesizer via a biofeedback capture device of the plant’s electrical conductivity (EC). The performance will be accompanied by video projections of fractals and digital art.

Like all other living things, plants, trees and fungi interact with the world of sounds. Science confirms that indeed trees and plants emit and perceive sounds. This is especially interesting considering the fact that these living things have no “specialized” organs: they have no mouths or ears. How plants, trees and fungi undertake this acoustic activity is currently an expanding field of frontier research.

Conversely, the transformation of green electrical activity, by capturing its EC, into audio signals to be used for the creation of real music is a method of great interest that is also useful for science popularization.
