Perovskite Photovoltaics for Space Applications

Dr. Narges Yaghoobi Nia (Iritaly, PVSPACE) will present on Wednesday 5th of February – 11.00 a.m., in meeting room of CNR-ISM di Montelibretti (Ed.15), the seminar: Perovskite Photovoltaics for Space Applications.

locandina del seminario

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a highly promising technology for space applications, offering numerous advantages tailored to the unique challenges of the space environment. Their lightweight nature and high specific power per unit weight are particularly appealing for space missions, as they contribute to reduced launch costs and increased payload capacity. Recent advancements have driven perovskite solar cell efficiencies to record levels, surpassing 26% for single-junction cells and 34.6% for tandem structures an essential factor in space, where energy resources are limited. The thin-film form factor of PSCs allows integration onto flexible and lightweight substrates, enabling deployment on curved or irregular surfaces of spacecraft and satellites. Additionally, their tunable bandgap, high radiation resistance, and solution-processable manufacturing enable large-area, scalable production at low costs, making PSCs ideal for diverse space applications.

Narges Yaghoobi Nia holds Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering in 2017. In 2014 and 2022 she was awarded a MARIE CURIE Fellowship as a part of the EU-funded project (Destiny FP7/2007–2013) and a global MARIE CURIE Fellowship for perovskite in space, respectively. She is founder of the PVSPACE Organisation. She is currently Principal investigator of P4SPACE project in Aerospace Engineering School of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy and EPFL University in Lausanne, Switzerland. She was member, key Person and task leader of VIPERLAB project (Fully Connected Virtual and Physical Perovskite Photovoltaic Lab Knowledge Exchange Portal, funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme). She is also Editorial Board Manager of Communication Engineering, Nature Portfolio. She has also the role of Communication Manager in the NEXTCCUS project (Next Generation Electrochemical System for Sustainable Direct CO2 Capture and Utilization/Storage as Clean Solar Fuel) ERA-NET ACT 2021. She is also Scientific responsible of CHOH – D project (Italian industrial project for CO2 reduction) in Italy. She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata. She has more than 12 years’ experience in the fields of emerging thin film PVs (especially perovskite solar cells/modules, tandem solar Module for terrestrial and aerospace applications) and electrochemistry of polymeric layers. She was a member of ESPRESSO, ENEA, PRIN and PERSEO projects and collaborator for the ASI (Italian Space Agency) projects. She published more than 50 scientific papers in international journals, books and chapters in addition to two patents relevant to perovskite PVs and electrochemical reactors.
